If You Didn’t ‘Get’ How The Black Church Keeps Black Women Single…
NAYSAYER ISSUE #4
“You are wrong for attacking the church. The church is God’s house. Everyone needs to go to church to be saved. Church is the only place a woman will find a Godly man. Not all Pastors are not the evil selfish beings you make them out to be.”
Those That “Get It” Say
-
(MEEBO Anonymous): Going to church doesn’t save you… that’s where you will find the most devils!
- (MEEBO Anonymous): Also to note is that the Traditional Black Church (TBC) is losing black women involved in interracial marriage because of its general unacceptance of these relationships. Most people need to re-evaluate why they are attending services. If it’s for spiritual enrichment that’s fine.
-
(Gina J): the purpose of Jesus was to bridge the gap between God and man. When Jesus was crucified the veil of the temple was “rent in two”. This means that man could go directly to God without a high priest. Tell me, why do people in 2010 still think they need DA PASTA to reach God? Jesus said God is no respecter of persons. Why do we idolize ministers?? We think the pastors word is the only information we can get from God. Also, we don’t cultivate a one on one relationship with God. We go so far as to think that what the pastor says is more important than what God tells us directly within our hearts.
-
(MEEBO Anonymous): I agree with some of the points raised in this article. Far too many black women IDOLIZE their pastor, who serves as an emotional substitute for a healthy relationship with an available man.
-
(Minister Sunni): Church IS NOT the only place to meet a godly man, so no, women should not limit themselves. At the same time, all men that attend service do not have a heart for God. Women have to determine the type of mate they want, then asses the qualities they have to attract them!
-
(MEEBO Anonymous): I was considering disqualifying my man from being my potential husband cuz he does not attend church. Thanks to this article, I have a new outlook. I understand now the reason why he does not want 2 go.
-
(Brooklyn Blu): We are so deep in illusion that we refuse to question the very foundations of our existence, but instead choose simply to regurgitate what we were told before our minds were developed enough the comprehend what it was learning.
-
(Pastor J. Michael): So, going to church to find friends, or companions is not the answer, but not going to church and giving up on the plan of God is not the answer either. The pastor is not some sovereign deity that can dictate everyone’s life by telling them how they should live or what they should do with their lives, what you do and how you do it is between you and God. (Rom 14:4) The pastors job is to study and teach the word of God accurately and consistently to the point of exhaustion (I Ti 5:17) not police the lives of others by telling them what to do. The major problem is that a majority of churches are having Jesus Peep rally’s with a little watered down motivational speech on the end called a sermon so no one is being taught the word of God anymore it is all “High-Five yo neighbor, Ain’t God All right, Stop sinning, and give yo 10% and God will bless you non-sense” People are easily deceived with kind words and sweet personalities and other plastic facades not because they want to be, but because they are ignorant of truth. The pulpit is unlearned meaning that teaching is not based on a literal interpretation of the scripture from the original languages or historical context and so you are left with made up or false doctrines.
-
(Jacob): I just wanted to say how happy I am that your article is getting the attention it deserves. The black community has pumped millions of dollars into churches and they have taken on this unassailable position. I avoid women from the church because frankly I want people who can be more up front about sex and life and who are not governed by an ancient book. Also, I am an ex-minister myself from the Southern Baptist tradition and who can blame folks for leaving. My father is not a minster but I have cousins in those churches and who head them and their are lots of church whose population increase are more related to birth rates than conversion. I don’t like to condemn them all because I seen a few that are doing good work but you have many that served a purpose and that exist more for the benefit of the pastor than the parishioners.

There is so much right with the original article that I am reluctant to point out all that is wrong with it.
Like life itself the nessage is a big fat paradox. Sigh.
What can we do? Accept it? Fight against it? Agree with the parts that make sense? Ignore the ones that are blatantly wacktackular?
One thing's for certain -- I do agree that general organized religion (in this example it manifests as The Black Church) is fueled by patriarchy and marginalization. That can never be good. So in that aspect I agree with the author despite the contradictory nature of the piece.
The fact that this article highlights a patriarchal theme by encouraging a lifestyle change based on finding a man---"black women if you want to find a man leave the black church" & promotes the very boxed-in type of thinking, stereotyping and generalizations that it so fervently fights against further confirms that we are all so very lost and confused.
But you can't blame the author for trying. Wake up calls are needed. So we should take them how we can get them.
