If You Didn’t ‘Get’ How The Black Church Keeps Black Women Single…
-
(Open Your Eyes!) Black women need to stop believing in so much b.s. Once a man knows that you are a “church girl”, you are so easy to figure out to a man that knows anything about human nature. If church is your crutch, then you’ll be handicapped for life in the real world.

(Just a man) Thought provoking . . . can steer dialogue several directions. There is a scripture in the new testament that references how some women would be deceived by following preachers who say what they want to hear. God will lead you to the truth only if you want to hear it.

(A Southern Diva) After reading your article a friend and I were discussing it. He told me “some black woman have been on their knees praying for a man for so long and so hard they need knee pads. ” This is a very sad AND true statement! I know quite a few truly wonderful young women who really DESIRE to be married that fit that description. Sadly in “waiting” and “watching”, now approaching 40, they are angry, bitter and cynical at the rest of the world. It’s very sad to witness as a friend.

(Dawn L): It is hard for people to handle that kind of information, when they are one of the misguided. People don’t want to be responsible for their situation in life. They have a need and want to believe that the situations in their life is caused by an outside source, it could never be their life decisions. Easier to be mad at the truth, than to believe u have been living a lie.

(meeboguest603640): Greeting, what you wrote about the black church and woman is the TRUTH THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH ,SO HELP ME GOD! James Brown had a song, Say it loud I’m black and I’m proud. I have my own song: “Say it loud I’m black and I’m ashamed” These Im-poster I mean pastor should be ashamed of themselves. They call me Don The Baptist and I have no Pastor, for like king David said : The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want…… I’ve been married over 20 years with two kids and like job I try my best to be the Bishop of my house. Keep up the good work my sister and maybe just maybe you will be able to wake up the Black RIP VAN WINKEL of the 21 century! We have been sleep to long!

(meeboguest580153: I think that you are spot on with your discussion of codependency and women. Women are indoctrinated as children with fairy tales. Childhood favorites, like Cinderella and Snow White, depict a young woman waiting for a prince to come and save them from lives of drudgery and unhappiness. When I consider the fairy tales and traditional socialization of black women, I find a situation where there a number of black women waiting to live their lives simply, because they have been told that their purpose for being on planet earth is to be a helpmeet. This has set up an interesting situation here, because the numbers (black women/men) simply don’t add up. What does Cinderella do when there is no Prince Charming? Black men are dying violent death every day. What does Eve do if there is no Adam? I say she continues a fabulous life. She works to develop and unfold her divine purpose. That does not discredit men and say that Prince Charming wouldn’t be well received if he would show up…
Category: Date Smarter, Not Harder, The Black Church

There is so much right with the original article that I am reluctant to point out all that is wrong with it.
Like life itself the nessage is a big fat paradox. Sigh.
What can we do? Accept it? Fight against it? Agree with the parts that make sense? Ignore the ones that are blatantly wacktackular?
One thing's for certain -- I do agree that general organized religion (in this example it manifests as The Black Church) is fueled by patriarchy and marginalization. That can never be good. So in that aspect I agree with the author despite the contradictory nature of the piece.
The fact that this article highlights a patriarchal theme by encouraging a lifestyle change based on finding a man---"black women if you want to find a man leave the black church" & promotes the very boxed-in type of thinking, stereotyping and generalizations that it so fervently fights against further confirms that we are all so very lost and confused.
But you can't blame the author for trying. Wake up calls are needed. So we should take them how we can get them.
